review 1: I knew that Wes Anderson felt inspired by the work of Stefan Zweig in his recent film The Grand Budapest Hotel, but I didn't recognize any specific Zweig work in the plot of the movie. It's clear, though, that what Anderson liked about Zweig was his tendency to nestle a narrative within a couple of different frames, as he does at the start of "Beware of Pity" and other stories. This book has excerpts from two Zweig books, and the complete story "24 Hours in the Life of a Woman" as well as an interview with Anderson about his interest in Zweig. The interview is interesting - if you haven't read the other works, a worthwhile purchase.
review 2: This was something I won as part of a competition and that i might have never otherwise have picked up, but glad that I
... moredid! The book a selection of writings from Stefan Zweig the inspiration behind The film 'The Grand Budapest Hotel.' It opens a window on a world long since past but in some ways not so very different to our own, the characters have real substance, the back drops richly explored, giving a true insight to the world as seen through Zweigs eyes. It is such a shame that this great literary talent chose to take his own life rather than live with a deep seated guilt he felt caused by what he saw as the ruination of his language by the barbarians that where responsible for tearing his country apart and causing death and destruction across the world as a consequence of the second World War. less
