review 1: I really tried to like this book. I thought I would too because it involves baking and bad relationships, two things I'm good at. But I had to force myself to read this book. It was a chore for me. I didn't like any of the characters. I think Sophie was annoying and she became even more annoying once she started seeing James. I think I was supposed to be rooting for her to do well, but since I didn't really like her, I didn't care what happened to her. I cared so little that I actually didn't finish reading this book. I feel bad when I don't finish reading a book, especially when I write a review about it. But I just couldn't do it. I was too bored with the story and the characters. It seems nothing ever happened to keep the book moving, it was the same thing throughout mo... morest of the book (the first half, at least).
review 2: Pear Shaped had many of the elements that I typically love in a piece of chick lit: a funny protagonist, a damaged relationship, and a set of quirky friends. If fell flat, though, in the love interest category. I couldn't stand James, which lead me to be unable to connect with Sophie because she is completely enamored with him.What should have been a quick read ended up taking me almost three weeks to finish. I never felt compelled to pick up the book until the last couple of chapters.I didn't hate it; I just felt no real connection to it. That being said, this book will still certainly appeal to foodies and those who adore Brit chick lit. It wasn't the best book I've ever encountered, but it also certainly wasn't the worst. less
