review 1: Charm & Strange was so compelling I read it in a few hours. Also, it was very sad. The author had me wondering about the nature of the book up until 3/4 of the way through. The description of Drew's struggles with himself feel authentic as well as his aloof behavior and the incident that eventually led to a falling out with his roomate are all handled carefully. The issues at the heart of the novel, loss - in several different forms - is also sensitively written. This was a really good, really sad book. There is redemption in the end, so it is very worth the time you'll spend reading it!
review 2: I don't think I can fairly rate this book, since I most likely would not have read it had I known what it was about. It's not that it was bad- much the opposite. But
... morethere are just some things that you don't want to think about, and being a mother, this book was exactly one of those things. I can't say that I'd recommend it to anyone either, but I'm glad that someone had the guts to write something so very brutal and beautiful. less
