review 1: Charm & Strange is a wonderfully powerful novel. Finding a way to discuss this book and its characters without giving away major plot points is hard to do. The author allows the plot and characters to unwind slowly into a dark place that still provokes compassion and confusion from the reader. The plot jumps back and forth between the past and the present but it is seamlessly done and contributes to the readers understanding of the characters. The connections between the past and present story lines are evident and eventually merge into one, yet there is still a clear separation. There never seems to be a time where something important or relevant is not taking place. However the realization that this is happening does not happen until the end when everything comes tog... moreether spectacularly. At times it is easy to become restless and frustrated. There are so many questions that are spurred by Win and what happened to him in the past that makes it relevant enough to bring back up. At times I was fighting with myself over whether I should put the book down or push through. The story is constantly moving in numerous directions, each with a new question that is larger and darker than the last. In no way does this book finish in the way most readers will expect and it is great. After I was done reading it my mind was swarming with questions and ideas. The sudden clarity that I found in the end made me unable to think about anything else until I succeeded in making sense of everything that I had just read and what I thought about it. This book stands out from others in numerous ways. It deals with tough issues and requires the reader to think deeply in new ways.
review 2: I absolutely loved this book. As I read, I was filled with a sense of dread and panic that was out of place in any young adult novel that I had read before. The book ebbs and flows between the present and the past, causing me to have to apply each chapter to the one that preceded it AND followed it in order to fully appreciate it. I wasn't quite sure why the characters behaved the way they did or actually what was going on until the final few chapters; however, I continued to read, intrigued by what I may find. What I found was disturbing, enlightening and horrifying at the same time. I highly recommend it. less
