review 1: Overall, I can't say I liked this anthology much. True, there are a couple of gems. When I saw the list of authors, I got really excited. Holly Black! Ally Carter! And I've read Kiersten White. None of the rest, though I've heard of most of them.Rainbow Rowell: I was drawn in to her story; it was sweet, but not my favorite. I loved how the story was set up, jumping back and forth, but it worked really well. The characters were interesting and real, which I liked.Kelly Link: This story really intrigued me. It was a tad bit confusing, but it worked for me. I loved the fox imagery. And the Honeywells, I wanted to learn more.Matt de la Pena: I didn't read this one, not interested really.Jenny Han: This one had a super cute ending, breathtakingly good ending. The build up was n... moreice too, as well as the characters.Stephanie Perkins: Aww! I loved this one! Of all of them, this one seemed to me one of the few 'holiday/hallmark-y Christmas types' that I wanted. That's what I was looking for when I picked this book up. And it delivered. It revolves around a couple who have barely met and they grow to like each other over a few hours. The guy was super attractive :) I felt like Perkins really delivered on her part of this anthology because I could feel the emotion and the lovliness of the writing. There was a tad bit of swearing.David Levithan: I didn't read this one either; I just didn't want to read about a gay couple, that's it.Holly Black: This one was... odd. A good odd, but still odd. I liked the Krampus guy and I really enjoyed the lore. It was a very interesting story. Just a little bit too much partying for me, but it's YA, so not that surprising.Gayle Forman: Eh. I didn't finish this one. It wasn't interesting, the swearing was super annoying, and I just didn't like the characters all that much. Myra McEntire: This one was super cute! Troublemaker meets nice girl. It's told from the PoV from a guy, which is the first one I read in the anthology (though the two I skipped I'm pretty sure were told by guys as well). The theme of forgiveness was very Christmasy, which I appreciated.Kiersten White: I am not really a fan of White. I've read most of her books (she has a new one out I haven't read, and a second book to a series I won't read), and so I know her style of writing, and it's been pretty disappointing. This was not disappointing, whatsoever. In fact, it was the second sweet story that I read in this anthology. I was looking for sweetness, and I found myself a chef. I LOVED the characters, even the minor ones, and the whole story was just so darned CUTE! It's been so long since I've enjoyed something of White's, and this was just so wonderful. Thanks for making me smile!Ally Carter: I was definitely looked forward to Ally's. I'm a HUGE fan of hers, and this little story was not disappointing either. If you were looking for sweet, Hallmark-y style Christmas story, here it is. Perfect! PERFECT! The characters were adorable, the twist was fantastic, and that conclusion! Plus, there wasn't too much of anything (too much kissing, partying, swearing, etc.) I loved it.Laini Taylor: This was was really interesting, and I really enjoyed it. The world was wonderfully set up, only slightly confusing, but the culture was intriguing and that ending was gorgeous. I'll definitely be reading more of her after this.Overall, it was fine. There were some gems, there were some fails. That's how it goes.
review 2: It's so hard to review short story anthologies, but I'll give it a shot. Overall, this was a lovely read. There was only one story I actively disliked, two I was a little "meh" about . . . the rest I really enjoyed. That's a darn good average. If you enjoy "Love Actually" or any Christmas-themed romantic comedy, you should probably read this book.Four of the stories I absolutely LOVED and I'm looking forward to rereading them. It should not surprise you that three of the stories I loved were from Rainbow Rowell, Stephanie Perkins, and Gayle Forman. The fourth one - and possibly my favorite of them all, didn't see that coming - was "Welcome to Christmas, CA" by Kiersten White. I've never read anything by her before but I'm going to try one of her books now. less
