review 1: A wise woman once said to me, "No matter how much you want to like a book, sometimes you just have to admit that it isn't the book for you." We were discussing this book at the time. I stopped reading about half-way through and started skimming through because I just could not get interested in it. It was clever that minor characters from the first book became central characters in this book but they still FELT like minor characters; I didn't care enough about them to care about whether their adventures were successful or not. The one thing that annoyed me about the first book was that there were too many characters, too many points-of-view, and too many subplots going on and it was constantly in danger of becoming too confusing. This book started out too confusing with al... morel the different characters, points-of-view, and subplots going on. It was too jumbled to be clear and too external for me to care about the characters. Probably the biggest disappointment I've had with a book all year.
review 2: Wow-I am worn out. This Indiana Jones style of a sci-fi steampunk romp was fun and action packed. The writing was detailed and very rich with lavish verbiage and descriptions. I really like the MC -Amelia Harsh-her search for the lost city of Camlantian in the hopes of avenging her father's suicide at the success of Abraham Quest -an over achiever in the greatest proportions. There is non stop action in at least 4-5 different venues in this story-from the jungles of the Liongheti to the inner street slums of Middlesteel, someone is constantly after something. There are great twists and turns, epic chases, bizarre species of plant, animal and metal beings-all meshed together as part of the great Circle.Stephen Hunt uses punny plays on words and references to familiar items like 'mumbeweed' mad for some fun. There is some slash and hack styles of violence when the Chars have to fight for their lives-but other than that, I think this is appropriate for a Harry Potter style fan. less
