review 1: I'm still not entirely able to cohesively form an opinion on this book- I liked it, even though I don't know that I liked the characters, particularly Kid the protagonist. While the setting and lifestyle were completely foreign to me, I found myself alternately saddened as well as intrigued and pervaded with a sense of welcome and inclusiveness. The deliberate use of gender ambiguity at times threw me, and other times made perfect sense as a literary device that pushed through my pre-conceived notions. But given the somewhat ambiguous end of this story, as well as the general tone of the book, maybe that's the best and only way to feel upon reading it.
review 2: The author managed to create two main characters without revealing their genders and it didn't feel
... morelike a gimmick. It was a sweet love story with the gender thing being important but not central to the story. I also really liked Brooklyn as a "character" in itself. My main reason that I didn't love this book is that I just don't personally care for stories featuring musicians or details of how musicians play. It's boring to me. Same reason I was disappointed with Where She Went. I also didn't feel like there was much to the characters personalities and the writing was a bit flat. A quick read though. less

Totally captivating — lyrical yet spare, giving you just what you need to make the story your own.

great read. I love how the gender of the main characters is never revealed, not even at the end.

Awesome. The author had a lot to work with, and pulled it off beautifully.
