review 1: If you’ve ever lived in or near the canyons of the Hollywood Hills; if you’ve ever faced foreclosure or known someone who has; if you’ve felt the rush of hope when Obama got elected, only to feel let down by what has actually happened; if you’ve agonized over the assassination of Martin Luther King; if you’ve struggled against racism and injustice in whatever way you can; if you’ve felt the panic of having no money, lost or roaming in a foreign country; if you’re interested in the concept of an American identity; then… I think you will love this book. The last paragraph is a beautiful lyrical crescendo.
review 2: I picked this off the library shelf because of its cover, and as soon as I started reading, I was hooked. I'd never heard of the auth
... moreor, but then I discovered via goodreads that he has a devoted following. And I can see why. The writing is lyrical and intense. The plotting is intricate. The style unique. The parents of a 12-year-old boy adopt a girl from Ethiopia. As the family slides into financial ruin, the mother becomes obsessed with finding the girl's birth mother. So off she goes to Addis Ababa, leaving the rest of her family in London, where a mysterious nanny appears out of the blue. But that's only the bare-bones outline. The father's and daughter's back stories intersect in surprising ways with a well-known figure in recent U.S. history. And the father is writing a novel, in which he describes an event that happened to another one of the characters in the meta-novel but of which he could not possibly know. Interesting and weird and challenging, and a good read. less
