review 1: I looked at all of the author's books so far and for some reason this one stood out as a first read of his works. I was not disappointed. This is a brilliant read, one of the best I've read for a long time. A reminder of why, when I find the right book, I feel passionately about reading. And I don't say that lightly. Books within books, stories within stories. It weaves, it dances, it spins from one scenario to the next. As a reader being led gently and then constantly being asked 'so you think you know the answer, but do you?' Again, and again, questioning your own abilities and thoughts and being given a proper brain workout! Different narratives spoken seamlessly and clearly. It's a book that's haunting, dark, sinister, yet written with a lightness of touch befittin... moreg an artist's delicate strokes. Beautifully descriptive at times, that had me highlighting passages, sentences, which I would read and re-read 3 or 4 times. Something I very rarely do. It wasn't about characters and whether I liked or didn't like them, just pure storytelling that carried me through effortlessly from beginning to end.In short, this book is like a black flower, dark, stunningly beautiful, with light bouncing off its delicate petals. A book that will stay with me for a very long time. I think, it's fair to say I loved it, and have no hesitation in recommending it highly.
review 2: Chilling and intriguing enough to recommend to all crime lovers. Neil Dawson, wannabe writer and soon to be father combines these two facts in a chilling story which he emails his father shortly before his father is found dead after apparently committing suicide; Neil sets out to discover why his father would do such a thing and looking through his things he finds names and a book and sets out to find out what they mean. The book is a story that his dad used to tell him when he was young and re-discovering it so soon after his father's death makes Neil think he is seeing things from the book.DS Hannah Price's father has also passed away and she too discovers odd things among her father's belongings; coincidentally, Hannah is the Police Officer who was assigned to Neil's father's suicide. Hannah too is remembering a story that her dad used to tell her. When Neil's girlfriend is abducted and the abductor tells Neil that he can make his story come true, Neil knows that somehow the abductor has something to do with his father's death and both have something to do with the story of the Black Flowers. He is given an ultimatum - Neil finds the kidnapper's daughter or his girlfriend dies.Hannah has come to the conclusion that her father too was somehow mixed up in the story of the Black Flowers and must stop it coming out. It seems that the world's of Neil and Hannah must collide.....This is a very clever piece of writing, a story within a story where the characters are connected though neither knows it and where hardly anyone knows whether the fiction is fact or are the facts really fiction.....It's a very chilling tale which will grip the reader's imagination and keep you enthralled throughout to discover the truth along with Neil and Hannah - a truth that is grisly and dark and will not disappoint. less

One of the most ludicrous, unbelievable setups for a novel ever. Still, it was good fun.
