review 1: This is a complex and clever crime novel which probably deserves a greater number of stars, but it made me feel so uncomfortable while reading it (and on thinking about it afterwards) that I can't say that I actually enjoyed it.The author creates such a sinister and surreal atmoshpere throughout the book that it made me feel very unsettled and tainted by it. The suspense it at times nearly unbearable and you feel that for the characters in the novel nothing will ever be fine again. Any resolution at the end of the book is somehow "infected" with what has gone on before so I didn't get a sense that it was "all over now". This is quite an achievement by Steve Mosby, but it meams that the book is far from comfortable reading and left me with a sense of dread, unpleasantness a... morend almost grubbiness.
review 2: I wish I could give half stars as I would prefer to rate this one 2 1/2. 2 seems a bit meager but 3 overreaching. Though it starts off quite simplistic and almost cliched, it gathers momentum as the story progresses and generates some genuinely unexpected twists and tense moments. The ending however falls back into the old cliched pattern and some of the shock of the novel's climax is dulled by its over-ambition to be dark and horrifying. I found the writing style to be jarring at first, swinging back and forth between first, second, and third person narration. In some ways it reminded me of Mark Danielewsi's style in House of Leaves, but failed to achieve the adeptness or seamlessness that Danielewski was able to. Overall this was an enjoyable read, ideal for holidays or sick days. Just don't expect anything terribly original to sink your teeth into. less

Definitely worth a read, but for me, it tailed off a bit after a gripping start.

A dark crime novel that pulls you in to it's gripping story. I loved it.

... teilweise etwas verwirrend und nicht so richtig spannend.
