Devil's Wake
review 1: Zombie books are not usual fare at all but having seen the trailer for the film the authors are making of the root short story for this novel, I thought I would give it a try. And I am glad I did! At least to the extent that reading a book that actually results in you having nightmares can be considered "glad". Writen as young adult novel, Devil's wake is a very quick read and, be forewarned, has a cliffhanger ending setting you up for the next book in the planned trilogy. The main characters, all youngsters in their mid to late teens, end up on a trek through a thoroughly infected and zombie overrun landscape of the Pacific Northwest and Northern California looking for both safety and lost family members. Adventures abound and relationships are built and, as with many YA ... morenovels and juvenile science fiction, the teens are for more competent than one would normally expect. The ending is abrupt but as long as you have the next book (Domino Falls) near at hand this is not as annoying as it could be. See that review next!
review 2: This is a story of a band of survivors in a world gone bad. Folks have begun attacking one anther, biting each other and spreading an infection that continues to spread. This is not really a zombie novel, sort of just not really, if that qualifies. The strange part of the book is it being authored by two authors who are married to one another. That in itself is not the strange part. Most books I have read that have been written by more than one author have a single cohesive voice that drives the story set forth in the book. With Devil's Wake I could almost sense two threads running through the book. One voice seems to enjoy exploring the feelings and emotions of the group and the other strives to reach a more edgier tone with the book. Suffice it to say there is some action, of course there is with a worldwide infection going on, just realize most of it is more G rated edging towards the PG level. So those looking for something with lots of gore and action, something like The Walking Dead, this may not do it. Otherwise this is a nice little book for a mature younger reader. Also I hear a sequel is in the works. less

A quick read. Hopeful zombiepocalypse book with teenagers. On the less gory end of the spectrum.

interesting take on the zombie genre. Good character development, but not enough answers.

new Tananarive Due series for a teen audience, chased by zombies in a rickety schoolbus!

Enjoyed this first in a series. It's a whole new take on zombies. Very imaginative.

Not bad but doesn't really bring anything new to the game either.
