review 1: This was a brilliantly epic book. I read Gardens Of The Moon nearly two years ago and this had a comfortably familiar feeling with names and places I recognized so it was easy to slip back into that world and the tale being told. I find it astonishing how Steven Erikson can create a world of so much depth, I find myself wondering at how its possible to keep up with all the characters as you write it and remember their complex histories. Starting to write a masterpiece like this must require a huge amount of concentration and it must be akin to a Herculean task. I don't think I would be capable of doing this once let alone 11+ times (The Malazan Empire 10 book series plus this book and other spin-offs), so I think to be in Steven Erikson's mind for a day would be a fascinat... moreing experience. My favourite character was Orfantal. I loved the way he worded things, I loved being privy to his thoughts and how he coped with the changing world around him at such a painfully young age. Witnessing so much including the death of his horse which he felt so guilty about, was so hard for him but he took it so well, like the tragic heroes he spent so long emulating in his games.I also liked Arathan, son of Lord Draconus. He had a way of seeing things as they are and speaking the truth even if it wasn't what people wanted to hear. He had an eloquent way of speaking and I felt sorry for the way things seemed to be turning out for him. There seemed to be a new and shocking death on almost every other page and the scene where the tragedy unfolded at the house where the marriage was due to take place saddened me to the point of tears. I had to re-read it to truly grasp that it had really just happened. What ended up happening to Enesdia was so awful I cried, for the tragedy of it, the brutality, the shocking lack of humanity expressed by the attackers. It was sickening and so so sad. A brilliant compelling book that I enjoyed very much.
