review 1: This is one of the best books I've read all summer -- I'm very sorry I've put off reading it since hearing about it last year. Nadler wraps up race relations, the father/son relationship, the impact of sudden wealth (a lot of really heavy topics) into a compelling story. The only thing that didn't ring quite true to me was Hilly's lifelong obsession with/devotion to Savannah, but I guess forbidden love (even if unreciprocated) has a way of seeming more substantial than it might have otherwise. I won't spoil the ending, but I really did not see it coming at all. (I don't read a lot of mysteries, so usually the endings are more predictable.) If you want something that's more substantial than a beach read, find the topics it covers of interest, but want a book that doesn't cl... moreub you over the head with various devices to make the book more "literary" in nature, then this is your book.
review 2: We meet Hilly three times during his life: when he's 18, 38, and in his sixties. Two people haunt his life. His father started as an ambulance chasing lawyer, and became richer than rich after bringing the first class action suit against an airline in 1947. The other is Savannah, a young black girl that Hilly meets when he's 18. His whole life is spent trying to understand those two: one always near the other with fleeting occasions that are important to him. In the end, he comes to understand one, perhaps more than he's wish; the other, he never will come to terms with. less
