Maggie Hope Mystery
review 1: Maggie Hope has finally achieved her wish to be trained as a field agent and dropped behind enemy lines in World War II Berlin. Her mission to contact the German resistance and deliver radio parts and enlist their help in placing a bug in the home of a high ranking Nazi. There is a lot about this series to like with its intrepid heroine and well-researched historical detail. But there are a lot of cracks in the plot. Maggie is an extremely gifted mathematician and code-breaker and the idea that she would be given a mission that is both very dangerous and slightly trivial is simply not plausible. She is supposedly well-trained but seems quite blithe about putting people in danger and is not at all prepared for the reality of war (people get kil... moreled).
review 2: This installment of the Maggie Hope series had me appreciating the preceding book, Princess Elizabeth's Spy, by answering some lingering questions I had about the book. I thought the history was solid and explored some of the aspects of Nazi Germany that are less talked about (comparatively, there is so much non-fiction and historical fiction out there about World War II there are books to read about everything). I also thought it was interesting the route they went with Maggie's character. It was a dark book, but the Susan Elia MacNeal balanced the darkness with her style very effectively. I would recommend this book. less
