review 1: Not having ever read anything else by this author, I went into it with no expectations. That being said, I also put it aside about 50 pages into it. Others describe the writing as 'bad' and even 'atrocious', but I disagree. The author portrays in depth, visual essays from the main character Susie's point of view. However, since Susie is admittedly one dimensional for much of her life (and certainly at the beginning of this journey) - I stopped reading because the writing was simply too tedious, and slow. I believe this was as much a fault of the authors wish to paint an in depth portrait of Susie, as it was the authors commitment to an un-relatable heroine. That being said, I once again picked it up and continued. Although I saw brief glimpses of Susie's ethics, the author... more keeps her at a superficial level - perhaps to remain true to her character? She seems to mourn, connect with her children, and move through her life from another plane. Always observing her grief and her surroundings; her family relations and business all through a filter of judgement and critique which enables her to keep her safe distance. So many reviewers seem a fan of Susan Isaacs, but hated this book. Perhaps I enjoyed this more than others because I had no expectations. Where others reviled her love of fashion, harsh eye and social climbing status - I actually laughed and found humor in it. The scene when her cousin laughs at her pronunciation of 'champagne flutes', and his reminder to her that she is from Brooklyn showed much needed chinks in her armor and made her human. If you are a fan of the mystery genre and rating this book as such, it will be lucky to garner 1 star. The author missed countless opportunities to lead us off the bunny trail and deepen the plot. Although the book gains a great pace in the second half, (and Ethel is a show stealer), from a mystery standpoint she doesn't keep the level high. The final pages seem rushed and without depth. I mean really? The entire crux of the book is to find out what actually happened - and once she does? Completely ant-climatic. I would have loved to see more interaction with Theo and closure with Babs. I give this book 1 stars for mystery plot and 3 for humor. Susie's ability to give birth to triplets without a single stretch mark, feed them purely organic and homemade foods - all while wearing couture fashion and never having a hair out place make it an especially light beach read. Take it easy and just enjoy Grandma Ethel, Sparky and their shenanigans. They almost make up for the rest. I said, almost ...
review 2: This is my first book by this author and it was good not great. I wasn't sure where the story was going to go since I do not know the author at all. I was waiting for more to happen or something exciting or revealing to happen. I felt like the build up was good but then it lead to a reveal that was much of a let down. So you are left feeling, that's it? The story was interesting and kept me reading to see what would happen and if the hooker did kill her husband but once we got to the climactic part of the story, it was a big letdown. I would give this author another chance with another one of her books but i wasn't ever really left wanting to talk about this book. less

An entertaining read. Not deep, but I did not expect it to be deep, lots of good lines!
