review 1: Douglas attempts to talk about the ways in which sexism still exists today but misses the point quite often when many of her points and examples are sexist in their own way. She continuously attacks traditional femininity while upholding portrayals of women who are more empowered and overall more "masculine." While these aren't bad things, neither is traditional femininity, and people need to understand that femininity is fine as long as that is what the woman chooses. What's not okay is the idea that women HAVE to be feminine. While that may have been what she was trying to get at, her points often come across as her demonizing femininity.
review 2: I liked this but didn't love it as much as I thought I would. The analysis of pop culture dragged on a bit more
... morethan it needed to. I would have loved for the last chapter to be more in depth. And she really tied herself in knots trying NOT to defend Sarah Palin and the media coverage of her. While I think there were plenty of legitimate concerns about Palin's run for VP, the media coverage of her absolutely was sexist and I felt like the author just brushed that aside, or worse, made it seem like it was okay because Palin doesn't identify as a feminist. Not cool. However, there was a lot to chew on in this book and I am glad I read it. While I (and probably anyone else who cares about this sort of thing and is paying attention) didn't think feminism's work was actually done going into this, it was interesting to think about the shift in how women are portrayed in the media between the 1990's and now. less
