Down the TBR Hole #9

A feature that helps you finally declutter your TBR shelf.

This was started by the wonderful Lia @ Lost in a Story whose blog you should definitely check out! I can’t believe I already did 9 posts in this series. And yet, my TBR is not getting any smaller… I am however rediscovering books, so that’s a plus! I hope all of you enjoy these posts as much as I enjoy writing them.

How it works:

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

Current count of books on my to-read shelf is… 583. Which is a lot. So let’s get rid of some of them (hopefully, sometimes I massively fail)!

1. The Humans by Matt Haig

I honestly have no idea what this is about. I remember this was once really popular, and it seems like it’s a contemporary with a sci-fi twist, and it’s about a professor who is one day found wandering naked and starts feeling like normal life is pretty pointless. Which I can relate to. The pointlessness part, not the wandering naked part. I was set on removing this, but now it got me intrigued again, so I am gonna hold on to it for a while longer.

Verdict: I am keeping you

2. The People in the Trees by Hanya Yanagihara

As you are well aware, A Little Life is one of my favorite books of all time, so naturally, I want to read more of Yanagihara’s work. This sounds super weird, given the fact that it’s about a professor who goes on an anthropological mission to find a lost tribe. He finds them, realizes they are incredibly long lived, due to a certain turtle. He then smuggles the turtle to the States, proves his thesis, but things start spiraling after that. I know, it’s a lot, but it’s also super fascinating.

Verdict: I am keeping you

3. Y: The Last Man, Vol. 1: Unmanned by Brian K. Vaughan

I was on a huge comic book kick a while back, and I loved Saga, so I wanted to read more of Brian K. Vaughn. However, nowadays, I only actively read Giant Days, so I am never probably going to pick this up.

Verdict: Goodbye

4. Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff

As I’ve mentioned before, stories about marriages and relationships fascinate me. Especially when things are sour in them. So this is something that is perfect for me. It’s a story about a marriage, but told from both perspectives, first from the wife’s perspective and then the husband’s. I am so interested to see how those two perspectives compare and how they are different.

Verdict: I am keeping you

5. What Was She Thinking? [Notes on a Scandal] by Zoë Heller

This is a book about a teacher starting an affair with her student. Saucy. That’s all I know about it, and the fact that everyone raves about it, so I am obviously intrigued.

Verdict: I am keeping you

6. Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things by Jenny Lawson

I am not entirely sure who Jenny Lawson is, but you probably remember this book getting a lot of hype when it came out. It’s her account of her life, mostly her struggles with mental health, and it’s supposedly super funny. I am still pretty interested in reading this, preferably on audio, if I can manage it.

Verdict: I am keeping you

7. Naïve. Super by by Erlend Loe

This is a Norwegian book, and I first saw it on Jen Campbell’s channel. It’s about a narrator, who’s searching for meaning, as he writes lists and obsesses over the nature of time. It seems like a stream of consciousness kind of book, which I love and it seems like it’s about a different, quirky character, which I also love.

Verdict: I am keeping you

8. My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece by Annabel Pitcher

This is a story about a young boy and his family, who are dealing with a terrible loss of a child. It’s an account on how that affected them, how it changed everything and tore the family apart. I am really still intrigued by it.

Verdict: I am keeping you

9. Reasons She Goes to the Woods by Deborah Kay Davies

I have no idea what this is actually about. It’s supposed to be a really creepy, magical realism kind of book, about a little girl who I guess goes to the woods? I don’t know man… I will probably never pick this one up.

Verdict: Goodbye

10. Poor Things by Alasdair Gray

This is such a weird book. IT’s a sort of Frankenstein story, because the main premise is that a woman, Bella Baxter, who is a young erotomaniac, is brought back to life with the brain of an infant. It sounds so so strange, but comes highly recommended and with that synopsis? I have to read it.

Verdict: I am keeping you

Again, I fail, and again, I remember some awesome books.

The overall tally:

Total books removed since I started: 25

Current number of books on the to-read shelf: 581

Thanks for reading, let me know your thoughts on these books if you have read any of them!
