review 1: Summary and Critique:The words in this story flowed together like a poem, it started at the beginning and moved forward to each different scene and then half way through the book it started from the end and went backwards. Each picture was black and white except the item each page talked about was in an orange color. That helped tell the story so you could clearly see which part of the story was being told. This was a story made for reading before bed because it’s setting is all throughout the night. The pictures told just as much of a story as the words did because you could tell exactly what was happening and what was being portrayed through each scene. The book was about a little girl who got a key to the house and in the house was a light and within the light there w... moreas a bed and a bird. The bird sings a song about the dark and he sings about the light in the moon shining into the house, thats the picture that shoes on the cover of the book). There a bunch of short poem like sentences about the house and different things found in the night and in the house.Classroom Use: As a classroom activity i would construct a fill in the blank worksheet for my students to use to follow along with what the book is saying. Since this is for a younger group of students it would be made word for word so they would understand how exactly to do it. This would help them follow along and then they would have the story to keep and read from their worksheet. review 2: The House in the Night illustrated by Beth Krommes, written by Susan Marie Swanson is a rhyme about a key to the house that burns a light in the night. The rhyme goes on talking about nighttime objects such as a bed, a book, the bird that sings about starry sky, the moon and so on.I really enjoy reading this book, it is simple but beautiful. It is full of black and white pictures with a little of light here and there. The pictures look like a magical night or a child’s dream because of the drawing style: sun and moon with expressions, bird that carries a child, and oversized flowers. Usually a black background would give readers a sense of suspense or horror, but in this case a black background makes the warm yellow light pop up. Also there are a lot of diagonal lines that show movements. The shapes are somewhat transformed like circles. With the yellow light, it creates comfort and endlessness. The endlessness circles also coordinate with the circular rhyme. It is a well thought picture book, and perfect for bed time story for children. less
