review 1: I think Meissner puts a lot of wisdom into the thoughts of her characters that may get lost with the straight-forward movement of the story and every-day interaction among the people. In fact, I think I may have liked a little more depth to make me savor these points more. Meg ends up in Florence, the trip her father promised her all her life and has finally delivered by way of a plane ticket. Her enduring love for her father doesn't anticipate that he will not show up, forcing her to go alone. Meg's Italian author contacts, whom she has been helping prepare books for publication by her company, take her in and show her the wonders of Florence. It's a very low key story, mostly about an author who hears the voice of one of her supposed Medici ances... moretors.
review 2: I was surprised at how little I enjoyed this book. Susan Meissner's writing is so beautiful, but the themes in this book didn't resonate with me at all. I didn't connect with any of the characters, and I'm getting tired of her three-women-from-different-eras formula. I was completely uninterested in Nora's story--it had no depth for me. And all the unfaithful husbands, miscarriages, and other tragedies got a bit much for me as well, with all the women being so tied together by eerily similar experiences. And maybe I'm just not interested enough in Italy in general to appreciate that aspect of the story. I almost gave this a 2 since it fell so flat for me, but she's a great writer and I think that a lot of the reasons I didn't like this were just personal experience and preference. less
