review 1: This is what historical fiction should be like!! I used to hate history in school because it was dry and simply facts and dates. This gives factual accounts of people involved in the Salem witch trials (mixed with fiction) surrounding a compelling story, making it amazingly fascinating. So, Susan Meissner is now on my radar. I loved her writing. The book has a current day story of a rich affluent college coed who is working with an 85 year old woman to put a very old diary into more modern language. The diary is of a girl who eventually is accused of being a witch. As Lauren read the diary, we the readers get to hear it in the English of the time. It was so authentic sounding. This was a Puritan community, convinced that odd things happening to a group of girls was a res... moreult of bewitching. The diary depicted what happened in Mercy's life prior to all of this, and during the trials. Her father and she knew it was all very wrong, but anyone who defended the accused were considered complicit and ended up on trial as well.Lauren is highly affected by the story and becomes quite fond of the aged owner of the diary (Abigail). The dialog is intelligent, and the symbolism was an added bonus.I loved this book, learned a lot and HIGHLY recommend it.
review 2: Nicely written, and a believable look at the Salem witch trials told through a (fictional, but historical) diary from the period written by a young woman who was caught up in the flurry of accusations and convictions. Some of the present day story was a little hard to swallow (rich girl trying to "find herself" by living like the less privileged, sort of), but all in all an enjoyable and quick read. less
