review 1: I had mixed feeling about this book. The switching narratives offered some relief from the trauma but were confusing. Maybe the author was intending things to be confusing because both the women it follows are confused. I wished Minot had spent more time developing Esther (one of the 30 kidnapped girls) than Jane (the American journalist). Jane's perspective made me feel annoyed with Jane - like, get over yourself already! - and also powerless. As an American in Uganda, she could do little to help, so what could I possibly do here? I didn't want the ending to tie up things neatly, but I was still disappointed in the ending. I'd be interested in your take.
review 2: Says one character, "If you are looking at the children as human beings, every day you will be br
... moreeaking." The truth behind Susan Minot's story is almost too horrific even to contemplate, but we must. Joseph Kony and his "Lord's Resistance Army" (LRA) operated in (i.e. terrorized) Uganda from the 1990s until the mid-2000s, when he escaped, probably to a neighboring country. This account of the abduction of children to serve as sex slaves or soldiers (or to be slaughtered), is told by Esther, a young, Ugandan girl abductee, and Jane, the American woman journalist covering the situation. This intimate personalization of two lives and the juxtaposition of two, enormously contrasting worlds makes this book not only absorbing but also quite compelling. less

Didn't finish the book. Don't like the writing style. Tragic and tough subject to read about.

Very disappointing...the two protagonists had such disparate stories, it just made no sense.

A good story of girls kidnapped in Africa surrounded by a slow story of a reporter.

Such vivid imagery, so depressing, unreal.
