review 1: I really liked most of the book, especially because I could relate to Berta's background - I'm also a Russian Jew. It was very sad at times, her story, her family, a little heart-breaking. I felt that her husband left her for too long and afterwards, the reader didn't receive any closure or explanation to his whereabouts. I lacked some emotional depth and some dialogues. The part of the jewish pogroms and violence and murder was hard to read and digest and I felt deeply sorry for Berta. The ending was a bit rushed and I thought the author could write another 'happier' chapter in the end, just to end the story nicely. otherwise, there was not much positiveness and hope in this book.
review 2: Set in late 19th and early 20th century Russia, the Ukraine area. Afte

She learns to use her wits to keep food on the table and dreams of the day she and Herschel can be together again. Lots of history, great characters involving plot. less
