review 1: I love this quote from Susannah Carson in the Introduction,"we read her novels to identify and to improve, to laugh and to sympathize, to enjoy the present and to revisit the past, and at times to escape our own muddled lives for a bit and find the clarity that only the best fiction can provide."I really enjoyed reading the perspective of great writers on Jane Austen's book. A must-read for any devotee of Jane Austen's work.
review 2: Being a collection, obviously it's not all uniform in interest and cogency, but on the whole, a lot of fun to look at the different things a bunch of smart people have seen in the same works, even when I haven't read the particular works in question but especially when I have. (Yeah, yeah, still haven't read Emma.) It's also prett... morey funny to read one essay that says one thing, then another that contradicts it, not in interpretation or opinion, but in presentation of facts. Ah, received knowledge. less
