review 1: I had never heard of Susie Moloney before I saw this book (oddly enough we're from the same town) but I really loved the sound of it & thought I'd give it a try. And I'm very glad I did. It's a fantastic read, a really perfect summer book. It is a book about witches but it's not in an overally silly or forced kind of way. Paula returns to her hometown when her mother falls ill. Along with her is her 12 year old daughter rowan. Little do they know of the legacy they are a part of.The characters are interesting, the story flows easily & I find myself wishing I hadn't read it so quickly. If I can get my hands on the author's previous books I will, based on how enjoyable this one is. Read it! Enjoy :)
review 2: A creepily fun page-turner! The narrator's asides keep
... more the tone light, which I appreciated, as witches are one thing, but the devil is quite another. (I blame those unsettling illustrations in my childhood Bible, and The Exorcist, the first and last devil book I ever read--until now.) Congrats to the author for getting under my skin enough that I hated a couple of characters--detested one, the main character's best friend, truly. Wasn't able to forgive her in the end--but I'm not convinced I was supposed to. There is a darker undercurrent running through The Thirteen concerning human nature, enough to give the reader pause, which makes this more than your average horror fare. But just as the book feels as if it might veer into something more unsettling, the author's humour surfaces again in a witty/mocking aside or farcical scene--the hilariously just deserts these women suffer! The narrative really picks up pace in the second half. Now I want to go read the rest of her books! (will check for devils first) less

I could not stay hooked on this book, even though it was a decent story ... maybe you can.

The Stepford Wives comparison is apt. Creepy witches and fine writing.
