review 1: *possible spoiler*This book was an enjoyable "light read" (aka easy, quick reading). Now based on the description the the story went in a different direction then I was expecting. I was expecting the usual witchcraft activities but I would say this went in an occult direction. Nothing to deep but not what I was expecting. The story was paced well and kept you reading but once it was over there were a few details I was expecting to come into play that did not. I also felt like the main characters, Paul and her daughter never really got the whole story of what was happening. We did but not much was explained to them. It didn't seem to bother them in the epilogue but it bothered me.
review 2: I can't even begin to express the wrong things with this book...
... moreIt's the last time that I'll pick a book up based on the comments that are written on the front of the book, because it did not bode well for me this time. As far as storyline goes, I've heard this one before. A mom down on her luck heads back to her childhood home with her daughter, who she had very young, because her mom has taken suddenly ill. Both mother and daughter slowly start to realize that something is wrong with the town. Turns out, it's full of witches who sold their souls to the devil years ago so that they could have everything they ever wanted... Unfortunately, some of the members of the coven rebelled and they don't have the numbers they need, so everything is being taken away from them... They need thirteen, and happily Paula has moved back to town and she is a descendant of a witch...First off, the writing was so confusing... I couldn't stand the bracketed thoughts interrupting the prose. They completely cut through the story, and then it took me a bit to figure out what had happened. Which only further complimented how hard it was to keep track of who's perspective the story was in at any given point. The author would flip in the same section, so that one second I was hearing about Paula, the next paragraph it was Rowan. There were too many voices to focus on, and eventually I just stopped trying to figure it out and just kept reading to see what happened next. Then, there were the shady story loopholes... Why did they need Paula and not some other woman in the town who would be willing to sell her soul? All the devil said was that he needed thirteen. Surely enough there was some other woman who could come into their circle. Why. Was it so important that Rowan hadn't gotten her period yet? Does the devil really care about that? I never really understood why it was so important that Paula and her daughter were together as a team...There are more issues, but eventually enough is enough. This definitely was not my favourite book I've ever read. I need to be more careful when I check out a new book... less
