review 1: I guess I only know how to compare classic-looking manga to Osamu Tuzuka. He really cornered crisp and creepy as the standard for me and this collection of stories really hit the mark. And the gift of this writer, is that he was able to capture the perviness of provincial Japanese farm life while injecting ideas that women are sexual beings too. I mean, this is pretty genius stuff to me. And the drawings are fabulous. What more could you ask for?
review 2: So this made me feel a little dumb - my ma once said "I just don't get Japanese narrative" in response to watching Miyazaki films, and this made me feel the same way. What? What were these stories about? Kappa -- weird turtle people? Those were cool. Sexual violence? Ok...but...ok? These felt like riffs
... moreon story the readers were already supposed to know, and clearly I didn't know those stories. They were beautiful though, and had something of traditional art/myth about them, which I liked. Still, needed some cliff notes. Guess I'm dumb. less
