review 1: I picked this one up because Suzanne Brockmann was speaking at the Festival of Reading. In person, she tells an entertaining story about how she decided to write about Navy Seals because a friend happened upon an article about Seals in a dentist's waiting room. This book involves a hunky ex-Seal who is rather involuntarily recruited for a dangerous mission and forced into accepting an attractive woman lawyer as one of his sidekicks. Sparks ensue. While there is plenty of action in the 500+ pages, a huge part of this book is introducing the secondary characters, setting the stage for future books in this series. In fact, I felt like the main characters were underdeveloped, while we really got to know the two gay guys, including their touching back story. The relationships a... moremong the characters are rather convoluted, with siblings, half siblings, step siblings, spouses, inlaws, co-workers, etc. etc. Not easy to keep them all straight. Somewhat unrealistic situations, but then that's not unusual for romantic suspense. Best part is that it's set in Florida, including partly in the Tampa Bay area.
review 2: I am a huge fan of Suzanne Brockman's stories, especially Trouble shooters and this is a sort of continuation or spin off . Ian is portrayed as a convicted felon/jewelry thief. He is a former Navy Seal and is quit the opposite of what people think and is trying to do good with some freelance operatives. I had a hard time in the beginning, I think it was a little confusing and a tad boring, slow somewhat but then it picked up. The issues I had were I didn't fall in love with the characters as I normally do in Suzanne's stories. I mean I love all the trouble shooters..Sam, Jenk etc. but Ian wasn't it for me. I love the suspense and twists and turns and action in most of her books but some of it was missing in this one, the action and suspense does pick up after a while and makes for a enjoyable middle to end, Phoebe again was just ok not a favorite character of mine..However Ian and Phoebe together are hot as hell..wow...I love Suzanne's books and can't wait to read more, this wasn't a favorite of mine but it was still entertaining. 3.5-4 stars.
