review 1: The premise was good, however the writing just didn't live up to it. There were a lot of grammatical errors and parts of the story just tapered off with no explanation. I've read a lot about this particular time in history, whether it fact or historical fiction and I found this a feeble attempt at a wartime storyline. It was okay, but could have done with a few more edits and been another 100 pages or so longer.
review 2: This book left me wanting more, feeling like I had missed some of the story. I liked the build-up and the weaving of relationships between the main characters, the interesting lives and histories they had lived. But I felt that, just when it started to get really intense, it just ended. I would have wished for more of what happened next: the s... moreearch to find each other, the life and maturation of Mila as an adult and now grown woman, how the events of her childhood affected her adult life. It ended too abruptly.As a Catholic, I really appreciated the careful notes about faith and particularly the faith of the characters being lived out. less
