review 1: Having read one awful Enoch book and one okay this was the decider whether to continue with this author. An intelligent, socially naive woman admires Bennett Wolf, explorer and favorite to Prinny. Presumed dead, Wolf returns to England to find his reputation tarnished by his travel partner who has claimed Bennett's journals as his own writings. London society isn't sure what to make of Bennett. Is he the brave explorer or was his true character really that in this latest published diary. Bennett is a bit uncivilized having raised himself from a young age with financial stipulation from his grandfather's will. Having only an uncle who never bothered with him, Bennett used the funds to pay for his own education. When he hears Lady Phillipa speak, and sees her he stake... mores his claim immediately. Phillipa has never been courted. Her good friends are males who love her sister. Bennett has to follow some of the rules of society to woo Flip an she tells him how to do it even though no one has every bothered with her. They team up to help retrieve the journals and fall in love and lust. I liked that Bennett only made some concessions to society rules. I also thought the animosity he and his uncle had and how they began to resolve it was different. Of course a pet monkey allows for a lot of fun scenes to be written. Enjoyable but not the kind of book that makes you want to reread right away.
review 2: This was a did not finish book for me. The heroine was annoying, "How could a man like you be interested in me?" Then she referred to herself as a "bluestocking" every other sentence. So annoying. The rest of the plot was how someone stole the hero's work and he had to prove he had written it. So he decides it's a good idea to punch the bad guy in the middle of his own ballroom and pull a knife on him in front of 200 people. I couldn't believe any hero would be so stupid.Don't waste your time. less

I had a hard time liking the hero. He was just a little too hard around the edges for me.

You'd think a book about an explorer would be more fun and interesting!
