review 1: Selfors, S. (2011). Smells Like Dog. New York: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers.Homer Pudding is a just like any other little boy who has big dreams. His dreams, are to follow in his treasure-hunting Uncle's footsteps, but his Uncle Drake all of a sudden disappears. Homer Pudding discovers that he has a droopy dog with no sense of smell and a mystery to solve to find his Uncle. Homer, his sister Gwendolyn, and Dog begin their adventure by leaving the farm and heading out into the world where their courage is tested and treasure hunters hide around every corner. Dog has a hidden talent and that treasure may soon be found. 2nd gradersQuestions for my students: 1. Who is Mr. Pudding? 2. Where did Uncle Drake move too? 3. Why did Uncle Drake put a gold coin on Dog's colla... morer? 4. Whose Daisy? 5.What is Dog's hidden talent?
review 2: SummaryHomer Pudding is an ordinary farm boy who's got big dreams-to follow in the footsteps of his famous treasure-hunting uncle. But when Uncle Drake mysteriously dies being eating by a giant tortoise, Homer inherits two things: a lazy, droopy dog with no sense of smell, and a mystery. Why would his uncle call this clumsy dog his "most treasured possession?" And why did he put a gold coin on the dog's collar? Homer, his sister Gwendolyn, and Dog began an adventure that will test their wits and courage as they leave their peaceful farm and head into The City where ruthless treasure hunters hide around every corner. Where they discover that Dog has a hidden talent and that treasure might be closer than they ever imagined. My CommentsThe good reviews on Amazon from teachers, children and parents got me to read this book but I found it to be just OK. The treasure-hunting premise was interesting, and original, but the book was too long and the plot too draw out. Smells Like Dog starts out as a realistic fiction mystery type book but then gets stranger and stranger. The main character, Homer is likeable, and his growing affection for Dog is touching and real. Other characters are just silly and often bizarre. Is this just the result of British humor? There are several sequels but I don’t plan on reading any based on this book. Best for 3-5 grade boys. less
