review 1: When you pick up a book that involves Matthew Hopkins and 17th century witchcraft trials it's hard to imagine that it would drag but that's what this book did. I really wanted to love this book, I read a lot of history books about this subject and era so I was looking forward to a fictional story which promised to scare me in the process but what I got was a basic history of the trials, their methods of extracting confessions and the man who pretty much began the hysteria, if I was going into this without any knowledge that would all have been brilliant, but there was nothing more really, a few glimpses of ghosts in mirrors, voices in the air and visions aren't really something that is going to scare me, especially when the narrative has such a dismissive attitude towards ... moreeverything she's experiencing.
review 2: I started reading this book with the hope that it was going to be scary but I never really felt afraid for Sadie and to be honest I didn't really like her. This book gets three stars because there is a good plot twist at the end but as I was reading it I did laugh out loud at how well stupid it all was really. And I was disappointing with the ending. One of the main things I liked was the way it was written with hindsight because it kept me guessing at what might be coming and I could see Felix coming a mile away. less
