The Cuvier Widows
review 1: Marian is a young married woman living in New Orleans. She finds out early on that her husband has been murdered. When she goes to the scene of the crime, she's shocked to learn that there are two other woman claiming to be her husband's wife. Since she was his first wife, his will leaves everything to her and her two children, but her name and her husband's company have been stamped by the scandalous affair. For a good part of the story, Marian wonders what could have drove her husband to take on two other wives and wonders if it was because he no longer found her attractive after she had children. Determined to provide for her children, she takes up her husband's shipping business and must deal with his very unwelcoming partner, Louis. Louis believes Marian has no place ... morein the business world and tries to force her out of the only living she has left. As the two quarrel over company decisions and fight for acceptance amongst their workers, sparks begin to fly. It's a love story through and through. While I liked the story and would have given it 4 stars, I am prepared to explain why I bumped it down to 3. The book ended before we ever learned who killed Marian's husband. The entire book mentions an upcoming trial, the accused woman pleads that she's innocent, somebody clearly poisoned the man and left three woman and two children without a provider, and the story ends without the final verdict spoken and the real killer in jail. (Perhaps the killer is revealed in the continuing books in the series, but it made this character's conclusion seem "un-concluded". While she may no longer care about how her cheating husband was murdered, at the very least, her children deserve justice and closure for their "Papa".)I also didn't like how many grammatical errors were in the kindle edition. It felt like halfway through the story the editor just didn't care to fix them anymore. Words were missing that would have make the sentence make sense. Sentences ran together when there should have been a period. Once Louis had a two sided conversation before I realized that another character was providing the responding dialogue. It took the ease of reading away from the story and made me feel like I had to concentrate more on the words and text. Imagination does't respond well to that.
review 2: First I want to say that I absolutely loved the fact that there was quite a bit of humor mixed in with this historical romantic mystery. This book first finds Marian in the motel room where her husband, Jean had been found murdered. As if that isn't bad enough, she then finds out that she wasn't his only wife. In fact, there are two other wives, and that one of them is actually the suspect in her husbands murder. Now she must not only deal with the fact that her husband is dead, although their relationship in her mind, had already been dead, for much of the twelve years that they'd been married, but she must also deal with the her late husband's estate and his other two wives.Marian discovers that she is actually the legal wife and that her and her children will be taken care of. She is actually given Jean's half of the shipping company to run along side of his business partner, Louis. Louis, as well as most others, don't think that it's a woman's place to run a business, but that she should actually be at home taking care of her children and the household. Marian is determined to show them otherwise! Sadly enough, Jeans' death couldn't have come at a better time in the eyes of Louis, as he is trying to get out of the shipping business and wants to sell his half. He figures that he can easily talk Marian into selling her half of the business, because he assumes that she thinks the same way as he does, that a woman would want nothing to do with running a business. But, he ends up just as surprised as he is wrong in this assumption. While Marian and Louis are forced to work together, they actually start to fall for each other. They are both very surprised by this very fact, and try to go against their feelings at first. But, as you and I know, this so often doesn't work. The way Sylvia McDaniels writes is amazing. I loved the way Marian and Louis go about slowly growing their relationship.I don't want to give anymore of this book away, but I do want to recommend it to you with high regards. less
