The Cuvier Widows
review 1: Betrayal, humiliation, shock, Marian Cuvier felt all these things. In a marriage for 12 years and knowing that her husband had not been a faithful man, she never dreamed that he could have been capable of this last blow to her heart and her womanhood. He’s dead! What happened? Who could have done this thing? These were all questions she had to ask herself. Then the big blow hits her square in the face. He had two other wives’s. How is this possible? Her husband was a bigamist.Marian was a strong woman, she had two kids to think about; she had to protect from the horrific scandal that would surely follow her husband’s death. She steps into a man’s world and takes over her husband’s half of Cuvier Shipping. She has become a working woman, something unhea... morerd of in 1895; women didn’t do these kinds of things. But she had to; she had to secure the financial stability for herself and her children. But stepping into this world meant a whole lot of changes in her life, despite all the press about her husband’s death she has just compounded the situation working in a shipping office full of men and Louis.Louis Fournet, her husband’s business partner in Cuvier Shipping is a handsome man in his thirty’s, wants out. Hell, the only reason he invested in the shipping company in the first place was because his friend Jean was desperate for funds in fear of going broke and losing the company. But Louis want his own company, he wants to sell Cuvier Shipping, and now his widow Marian has decided and took upon herself to insinuate herself in the shipping office. This is unheard of; it’s a travesty he wants no part of. But Marion is determined to oversee her half of the company and he soon learns that Marion isn’t going anywhere, she’s one determined lady and smart too. Huh, go figure that, a smart woman with a head for business.Over the coming months he learns a whole lot about Marion, her strengths, weaknesses and fears. But is Louis any better than his partner Jean? He seeks and is determined to undermine Marion and sell the shipping company underneath her just to satisfy his own wants and dreams. Sounds like an asshole to me and no better than his partner. But as fate has it, Louis’s life is about to take a big nose dive straight into the arms of the very woman he’s trying to screw. And I don’t mean in the lovin’ way. This overall was a good book, it did get a little slow at one point but the author picked up the pace again and the story unfolded. The telling of this story was a good one; the characters were well rounded and spoke to the author. You could relate to Marion with all her fears of not being a real woman, why else would her husband have taken 2 other wives. Was she not good enough as a woman to please him sexually? Was she not attractive? How many of us women have been there before? If we were truly honest with ourselves, probably all of us at some point in our tender love life. And Louis, well sometimes I just wanted to reach in and jackslap him for all his underhandedness towards Marion. The love scenes were very tasteful, well written and believable. The courting, when Louis tries to get Marion to marry him to get control of the shipping company was very thoughtful and you can tell the author is a romantic at heart. There was not a lot of humor in the book to speak of; it was more of a serious book I thought. The editing was good; I only found one sentience that was lacking in the proper grammatical sense. So, what happens with Marion? Does she restore her faith in her womanhood? Is she capable of attracting a man? Is she laking in bed? You’ll have to read this one to find out all these answers. All in all I enjoyed reading this one. I liked the author’s style of writing and her romanticism that she portrays throughout the story. There was only one scenario in the book that the author did not relay to us readers, I wish she would have. It leaves you hanging out there on a limb, but I can’t tell you what that one is it would give away too much of the story. So, you’ll have to find out on your own. Sorry ladies, I’m sure she will address this scene in one of her other copies in the Cuvier Wife’s series.I give this book an RT rating of four hearts and the cover five diamonds. I liked the cover it was pretty and in context with the author’s story line. And I do want to read the additional books in this series.
review 2: Interesting plot that would make the series The Curvier Widows a good and memorable read, highly recommended to all lovers of a good romance mixed with suspense. Jean Curvier was found dead in a hotel room, his young bride the obvious suspect in the room with him then came the twist as two other women also known as Mrs. Curvier stepped in. This immediately set the pace for the first book in the series Wronged. Marian Curvier the official Curvier widow according to the law is left behind with all the mess, sorting out the failing business as well with two small children, seeking answers and been harassed by children who had no idea what the truth was. Her distrust in men was turned to her dead husband's partner Louis Fournet. This lead to interesting scenario's through out the story line.Since she did not trust him she decided to be part of the business during a time that women simply did not work. Creating quite a stir in the business and with the community.Strong willed, stubborn and very determined to know the shipping business she settled into her husband's old office and since Louis and the staff did not want to help her she turned to all the ledgers. Spending her days familiarizing her self with the ins and outs and at the end because of this knowledge she faced furious clients and staff making sound decisions that was beneficial to all involved. This turned the staff in her favor and she was accepted as a real partner.Louis Fournet had his own agenda, trying to convince Marian to sell the business to begin his own dream he did everything in his power to side track this strong woman but found himself more intrigued with this determined young widow. Soon sparks flew and romance blossomed between the two as they both came to terms with the past. Becoming the healing balm to a crushed spirit. All the characters in the story had their own personality that complimented the two main characters, highlighting them as believable people. Beautifully written, faced pace with moments of laughter and passion mixed into the plot to keep it entertaining as it unfolds page upon page. But the question remained who killed Jean Curvier? less
