review 1: Fino a metà libro ero piuttosto indecisa sul voto da assegnare.Poi ci sono state alcune rivelazioni e discorsi che mi hanno fatto cadere le braccia e che mi hanno portato a lasciare due stelline su cinque.Partiamo dal fatto che, se avete letto l'originale Dracula, e/o se avete visto il film di Coppola, e/o se avete letto il "seguito" intitolato "Undead", questo libro vi apparirà piuttosto noioso, perchè la storia è sempre la stessa.Nella prima metà, molte battute sono addirittura ricalcate dal film di Francis Ford Coppola, e ci si chiede più volte se si sta leggendo la sua sceneggiatura.Poi l'autrice, per scostarsi dall'originale, fa delle grandi modifiche ai personaggi, soprattutto a Dracula, e allora sorge spontaneo chiedersi come fa Mina: Mi hai mentito tutto ques... moreto tempo? hai dovuto modificare a tuo piacere la storia per far sembrare Dracula prima una vittima, poi una mammoletta?Devi screditare in questo modo Van Helsing e gli altri?Tralasciamo il fatto che Mina si faccia un sacco di domande esistenziali in stile Ana di 50 sfumature.Verso la fine si riprende un poco, ma comunque Dracula (il personaggio) mi è stato piuttosto antipatico, per come si è comportato e per come parlava di tutto.Nella mia versione del libro le parole che andavano a capo venivano troncate di netto senza punteggiatura, e questo ogni tanto mi mandava in confusione. In conclusione: consigliato a chi non ha mai avuto a che fare con la storia di Stoker, per tutti gli altri lasciate perdere.
review 2: When I first saw this book on the shelf, I was interested yet wary that this book might be yet another story to add to the ever-growing pile of modern day spin-offs of Stoker's classic novel, "Dracula". This novel, however, did not disappoint! Syrie James is a magical and elegant story-teller. She wrote this novel in such a way as to convince the reader they were reading from the very journal of Mina herself, with great attention to detail of events as well as style of writing, daily life, and behaviour of 19th century England. The words were almost poetic and weaved a ongoing masterpiece of imagery and heart-felt emotion along the way. As the title suggests, there is romance in this tale, yet I would not let it dissuade you if should find yourself apprehensive about this fact. Indeed, this story is much, much more than that. It is a tale of love, friendship, courage, honour, sacrifice, and ultimately of the human condition which will thrill you, pull at your heartstrings and, perhaps at times, even provoke philosophizing about man's constructs of morality and the complexity of the human spirit. At last a book to provide greater depth to Stoker's novel, "Dracula", that is true to the classic tale, and yet so wonderfully different. less
