review 1: The Missing Manuscript of Jane Austen by Syrie James was an absolutely delightful novel. I am impressed with how well-executed this concept was with regards to her writing style. I was so drawn in that I had trouble putting the book down when I had to. It took me no time to fly through the 410 pages! This novel is a book-within-a-book format. Perhaps around 300-350 pages are actually dedicated to the manuscript itself that the main modern-day character Samantha searches for and discovers. I wasn't expecting it to consume so much of the book, but I'm glad it did since it was such a good, well-written story. I have to admit there were about three times where my mouth fell open because of plot twists and revealed secrets.I've thought about whether or not Syrie should have left... more out the modern-day part and dedicated the entire book to the manuscript, but I've decided it's best as is. The main character Samantha discovers the story and then in the end, after she's read it, makes a choice that turns her life a different direction. I think this exemplifies a certain truth of which book-lovers are greatly aware- that books can affect us, inspire us, and sometimes change our outlook on life itself.Thank you, Syrie, for not only sharing with us the story of Rebecca Stanhope, but the story of how someone else in this day and age was moved by it.
review 2: WONDERFUL. James sounds so Austen-like. Love the details about Oxford, Austen's family, the places she visited. Loved the addition of the contemporary characters, though, too! For once a librarian isn't stereotyped as dowdy and shushing, but young and hot. She not only has two handsome men in love with her, but they support her career dreams, too! I really loved this book. Samantha teaches about how Austen writes, too--added bonus. less

The novel within the novel worked well. She really captured the Austen way of telling a story.

Not as good as the first book in the series but still a fun read.
