review 1: Freakin' delightful. Reminds me greatly of Terry Pratchett's Discworld, with distinctive, interesting races roaming around, a few practical, put-upon leaders trying to keep things under control, and a fond but mildly cynical tone about how people operate, and what can be done to make them better. I loved the protagonist, and could do with more books about her. And the book's take on magic as essentially a form of mental illness that takes over certain people. Clever, entertaining, weird, and a little wistful. Looking forward to moving on to the author's recently published novel.
review 2: This is a delightful story. If you're a fan of Digger, you'll love this. It's not quite as good, it doesn't have the emotional beats or quite the sparkling inventiveness that
... moremade Digger so amazing, but it is solidly a story in the same vein, and a very clever play on the tropes of high fantasy. We need more books like this. And if you haven't read Digger, of course, stop what you are doing right now and GO READ DIGGER. less

Weird. Very weird. But not bad at all. Will definitely be reading more T. Kingfisher books.

That was fun! And a really INTERESTING approach to magic. (Magic as psychotic break.)
