review 1: While a fascinating idea, Barron's book simply lacked momentum. It was a struggle for me to finish the entire thing due to the vapid characters and plot, and the overall predictability of the plot line. There were many missed opportunities on character development that I would've liked to see. There were several fun scenes, such as when Promi stole pies from the High Priestess, but it was mostly dull, dreary, and vapid. Definitely not recommended.
review 2: So I picked this book up solely because I love T.A. Barron's previous work. The Merlin Saga is one of my favorite series and I could easily read them all again in a week. However, I just couldn't get in to this book. Maybe it was because I was expecting it to be more for older teenagers. Okay you caught me,
... moreI'm not a teenager anymore, but I do enjoy YA books still. This book felt more like a middle grade read that I'm sure I would have loved when I was 12. It was just too fluffy and the dialogue seemed fake/forced. Usually Barron is much better at drawing readers in, and because of this I really tried to finish this book, I got to page 200 before I realized I just wasn't invested in it. It's okay though, I STILL LOVE YOU T.A. BARRON! less
