review 1: A heart-breaking novel about the hardship of immigration, "A Palace in the Old Village" by Tahar ben Jelloun tells the story of Mohammed and his family, who leave Morocco and immigrate to France, in search of a better life. The novel depicts a lonely existence, an emptiness and lack of belonging that knows no home. Ben Jalloun describes the "strange promises of Lala Franca", lameting that "our fathers didn't prepare us, told us nothing. They'd never have imagined that men would leave their land and go abroad." Caught in an abyss of loneliness and inability to assimilate in the country where Mohammed lives for forty years, he also loses touch with his children as they all leave the proverbial family home and start their own lives and careers. The narrator describes Moham... moremed as "a man mistreated by exile and France. Mohammed is a lost man, a suffering man, for France has taken his children from him; France gave him work, and then took everything he had." Ben Jalloun's novel is a telling depiction of the difficulties faced by migrant workers who seek better opportunities abroad, and attempt to hold on to their religious and social identities in their new communities, where they never truly integrate.
review 2: المغربي البسيط الذي نُفي مرغماً إلى فرنسا بحثاً عن عيشٍ يمكن أن يكون أفضل، حاول طول منفاه أن يحفظ على هويته من الضياع في كم التناقض بين الهويتين، وعلى داخله من الذوبان في المادي المفرط ومطلقات الحداثة. مع أن محمد استطاع أن يحافظ على كامله العربي المسلم إلا أنه لم يستطع أن يحقق الشيء نفسه مع أولاده، ففرنسا قد أخذت مقابل بعض المال الذي أعطته إياه كل شيء. كل شيء. ولذلك مات بائساًمات وحيداً في الدار التي بناها أخيراً في قريته من المال الذي كسبه في فرنسا، أعد كل شيء كما حلم أن يعجب أولاده: أريدها داراً كبيرةً بحجم قلبي، لكل غرفة حمام، وأريد مسبحاً، وأريد في الفناء دجاجات وبقرةٌ لكل ابن. لم يكن يريد شيئاً بعد الشقاء إلا اجتماع للأسرة تحت سقف واحدٍ: فلنتحرر من المنفى ومن عادات الفرنسي، هذه الأرض لنا فلنقسم أننا سنموت عليها وندفن فيها.خسر محمد معاركه الأخيرة، مع التقاعد الذي أعلن انتهاء حياته، ومع المنفى الذي اختطف أولاده، ومع الهوية التي ظلت مشوشة.. أخيراً جذبته الأرض أرضه إليها" سلام قولاً من رب رحيم " ..الرواية مفجعة، هاجس الهوية وهذا الصراع بين الهويتين العربية والفرنسية والذي يشغل معظم كتاب المغرب والجزائر، ومحاولاتهم المتكررة لوقف الذوبان، والإصرار على شكل البلد ولونه واسمه ولهجته وحتى أكلاته الغريبة على المنفى. الصراع الأزلي بين المنفيين والمنفى، وذلك الخط الخفيف بين التأقلم ليعيشوا، وبين الذوبان.لغة الرواية أقل إجادة من لغة " تلك العتمة الباهرة "، و" حين تترنح ذاكرة أمي "، ربما يعود ذلك إلى الترجمة less
