review 1: This book hits all of the right old man diaspora tropes--doesn't understand his children's infatuation with the West, keeps longing for things to go back to the way they were, except for things weren't all that great back then, either, the whole melancholy. Yet as it goes towards the end that you think you know, there are one or two detours that sweeten the book and set it apart from many others like it.Gave me a good sense of the Maghreb diaspora, and France in the 2000s (there are cultural footnotes in the back!) and made me feel more sympathetic for the old men I see walking around my complex in the evening.
review 2: تتحدث الرواية على لسان أب مغربي من الطبقة العاملة هاجر إلى فرنسا بحثا عن فرصة �... more�فضل له وأطفاله. المحور الرئيسي هو أزمة الهوية والصراع النفسي الذي يعيشه الأب وهو يحاول أن يحتفظ بأبنائه من حوله وأن يبقيهم جزءا من ثقافته ومن الثقافة التي جاء منها في وجه طوفان الثقافة الفرنسية التي نشأ فيها الأبناء. قدرة بن جلون على الوصف مدهشة وسرده سلس وجميل والترجمة مميزة وحافظت على جمال الرواية. لا أشك أن كوني أبا لطفلين ينشآن في ظروف مشابهة له دور رئيسي في انغماسي في الرواية. أعتقد أن كل من يربي أطفالا في بيئة مختلفة عن بيئته سواء كان دارسا أو مقيما سيستمتع بهذه الرواية. less
