review 1: The narrator was wonderful. Before this book I was clueless about Islam, Muslims, Mohammad, and the Middle East. The book was 17 hours long and a large amount of history was covered which was a little overwhelming at times. I found myself wanting to take notes but I forced myself to focus on the intent and message of the book rather than the details. I am so glad I read this book. I feel just a little bit more intelligent about would matters. If you've ever wondered about Muslims, their religion, culture, customs, and how/why they believe what they do, I highly recommend this book.
review 2: A comprehensive look at Islam through a historic lens. The book is wrought with information about Islam's rise first as a religious influence and then a political power
... more. There are also some highlights on women's roles. Here, Ansary does a great job of preserving Islam's views on women as equal to men. As Ansary points out, women's repression in the region is a product of cultural and social factors that pre-dated Islam, then later spread by doctrine that diverted from Islam's initial text. My only reservation with the book is Ansary's characterization of the Israeli-Arab conflict that led to the Palestinian occupation. It does not accurately portray the events as described by those Palestinians who lost their homeland to the settlers, including my mother, and the numerous accounts, both personal and academic, that better capture this period. less
