review 1: This book is one part history of the world, one part *detailed* history of the Arab/Muslim world. The promise of the book though is that it's a telling of the world history from the perspective of the 'Middle World', which author takes a stab at in various parts of the book, but for the majority of the book this is a regular telling of the history of the world with focus on the Arab/Muslim world. I wouldn't really recommend it.
review 2: By the end of this book I felt like I understood the world in a new way. I guess that was the point. Growing up with a western spin for every eastern action has deprived me of so much context surrounding the Islamic perspective. And not just perspective, I was also woefully lacking in knowledge of events. I feel somewhat like a
... more pawn of political propaganda who didn't realize the extent of my countries role in the conflicts in the middle world. For example, I knew we put sanctions on Iraq but I had no idea the kind of poverty and mass deaths that were a result of those sanctions. I only knew the western spin was that sanctions fight tyranny and I thought I was smart because I questioned their effectiveness. I feel inspired to read more about world history and continue to add more perspective to world events. This is far and away the best, most informative book I've read in some time. less
