review 1: Quite informative -- and it's a perspective we need (did you have any idea just how many inventions and discoveries came from the other side of human culture?) -- but Tamim Ansary too often bends over backward to make his narrative relatable such that he often includes obscure or bewildering references -- such as to Dayton, Ohio, Bill Maher, or weeknight talk shows -- that clarify nothing. STILL IT'S REALLY GOOD
review 2: I read this book based on a recommendation from on of my Command and Staff professors. He was spot-on in recommending this book! The author has written chapters for high school history text books in the past; and, based on his experience with Middle Eastern events being side notes in these books, he decided to write this book focusing on Middl
... moree Eastern history with European events as the sides notes. The switch in perspective was definitely interesting. Additionally, having been born in Afghanistan, the author brought personal knowledge of the region to the book. The book covered the period starting just prior to the beginning of Islam to present. Though this is a long period of time, the book was a well-written and understandable summary. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the Middle East. less
