review 1: In many ways, I liked this much better than the first book. However, I find that I don't care as much for the world and mythology Blackwell has set up and we get to see more of it in this book. The thing I absolutely loved in the book and what almost gives it 4-stars for me is how Blackwell treats Alex's death in this book. Because it was so shocking that he dies in the first book (right after Scout completely commits to him and dumps Charlie), I did keep expecting him to suddenly be alive again. Blackwell does an amazing job of making you feel like Scout. Even now, I'm having a hard time really accepting he's dead, but throughout the book, you're right there alongside her dealing with her heartache and disbelief. I thought it was fantastic! However, I'm still not digging Bl... moreackwell's writing style entirely (see my review of the first book to see why), but mostly I'm not in love with the world and magic involved in the book.In this book we meet the Volturi...I mean the Alpha pack...and there are so many things that didn't quite work for me with this. Besides the fact that I have a hard time swallowing that this Shifter government would work for so long. The rules are so rigid and oppressive, that it's hard to believe that they would stay in power for so long. (SPOILER) Especially when two teenagers are able to wipe out a group of five of their best warriors, while one is handcuffed and the other has a broken leg. I've seen this type of dictatorship used in books before and done in a believable way, but I just don't feel like this book was a great example of it. It's run by a petulant teenager and her decrepit mate and as far as I can see, there is no benefit or reason why the Shifters listen to a central government. They get nothing from the Alpha pack, except edicts and rules. And if they're so strong that they can keep everyone under their thumb, how is Scout and Charlie able to incapacitate so many of their warriors so easily. It just doesn't make sense to me.I'm excited to move onto the next book, because I'm super curious to see where this is going and there's a whole lot of mysteries I'm excited to see unfold. So, even though there are aspects that keep me from really falling in love with the story, I do think it's entertaining.
review 2: Wow, this book is much better than the first. Unfortunately, I think it suffers somewhat from being a "middle" book in that the majority is a lull compared to the exciting plottiness of the other two (I'm assuming, since I haven't read the third), but it definitely gets interesting as it progresses. This book also did not suffer as much from the sheer lack of believability (emotionally...plot...) and pacing issues of the first book. I'm glad I stuck with the series. less
