review 1: Eh, I guess I am finally getting too old for some YA. I am sick to death of reading about these self-absorbed special snowflakes that aren't actually special in the slightest. They do nothing but sit around, pine for boys #1 and #2, and ANGST. It is all getting very, very old. DNF at 50%. I just didn't care enough to keep going. This is decently edited without any glaring typos, and there is some snappy dialogue here and there. Otherwise, it's your basic teen paranormal romance with a love triangle shoehorned in for good measure. Same old, same old. -_-
review 2: This story and book is pretty standard fare for the werewolf genre. It tries to shake it up by having were-coyotes, too, but I didn't think it felt like enough of a difference to really make it unique;
... more I kept waiting for Blackwell to introduce other types of were-animals, like bears and mountain lions, but I guess they only come in wolf or coyote. Blackwell did introduce an interesting element of the Seer in the pack, which is a non-Shifter, magical human who helps out the pack be stable and happy. It was a little strange and I'm not sure if I really liked the idea, but it was different. Also, Blackwell had this whole "Dream Walking" thing that the hero, Alex, could do, which he used to watch Scout as she grew up, but it makes no sense, since how could he see what is happening during her day while he's asleep, since they would have been asleep at the same time (or roughly the same time).That being said, the romance is pretty sweet and done well, I thought. It does feature a love triangle, but I liked that the heroine, Scout, actually made a decision, rather than sitting on the fence for two books and finally deciding at the last minute at the end of the trilogy. That's so annoying. And I'm glad she went with the guy she did (SPOILER), because I really didn't like Charlie. The guy didn't get off his duff to show her that he was interested until someone else started pursuing her and even then, he didn't really commit to her as he still had a girl he was dating back at college.I'm not sure how I like Blackwell's writing style. She a fan of vagueness and there were a few times that I had to reread passages in order to make sure I understood what she said. She loves implying things at times, rather than showing them, which can be effective at times, but mostly it can get confusing.It has the feel of Twilight (except with a more likable and less bland characters), but with dashes of Patricia Brigg's Mercedes Thompson series. It's mostly pretty derivative, but it's fun and enjoyable. What I really loved about the book was the ending. That was unique and turned a lot of the YA paranormal romance tropes on its head. I thought it was shocking, but I liked it because it was bold. However, I'm nervous that the author is just pulling one over on the reader, which I don't care for (I know this is vague, but I don't want to spoil it for you because the ending as great!) less
