review 1: 4.5 stars - gosh, I really did like this book - didn't realize when I picked it up that it was part of a series, so will have to go back and read book 2. Faithful Place is really more than "just a detective story". Tana French created great characters and such a fabulous sense of place - I found myself going online often to look up Dublin social history or the background of all of the great Irish/Dublin idioms and slang - all so interesting! This was the kind of book that you look for every opportunity to read, then feel sad when it's over. Good stuff!
review 2: This book was extremely disappointing to me, and I'll explain why in few points:1)The ending was fairly predictable for anyone who is familiar with thrillers. It was truly, truly disappointing not o
... morenly to find out the killer was inside the family (which seemed pretty transparent right from the start), but most of all to realise that he is the character with the most predictable motive for murder ever. If I were French, I would have chosen someone in the family so as to show the family dynamics, but rather someone with a less predictable motive OR I would have set a siblings group murder (that could have brought to further interesting implications). Instead, she preferred to be lazy. And I don't like when a writer is lazy. 2) BORING is the right word to describe this book. Reading 377 pages of infinite descriptions of Frank's family, his love for his child, his affection for his ex wife...bla bla blaSeriously? Why the hell would I care? Just the essential next time, Tana3) The characters acted stupid. I don't mind the other characters acting dumb, it could be quite alright (though I'd prefer smart characters, as smart characters make smart books), but please don't make the main character act like he's a freaking monkey. I just couldn't stand Frank going around either kicking televisions or not answering urgent phone calls or threatening random people or Whatever it is and getting away with it like nothing. It just doesn't make any sense and it means forcing the plot way too much. less
