review 1: I was a little worried that I wouldn't like this as much with Torin no longer a marine but it didn't matter because she was as freaking awesome as ever (after all there are no ex- Gunnery Sergeants). In this one we have Torin trying to settle into life as a salvage operator with Craig after nearly 20 years in the military and dealing with after effects of the events from the previous books. Then Craig is kidnapped by pirates so Torin calls in her fellow ex-marines Werst, Ressk & Mashona and its off to rescue Craig and kick some pirate ass. I LOVE Torin - even the borderline crazy version we get in this story as she mows down everyone who gets between her and Craig. I am so sad there are no more books in this series. I want more. More Torin, more Presit, more marines, more ... moreabout the plastic aliens. And given the job they take at the end there could totally be more books.
review 2: Based on the summary alone, I'm not sure I would've picked this up to read, and for the first part of the book I was feeling a bit cheated. However, I was under the impression that there was no such thing as an ex-Gunnery Sargent, and this is proven true about halfway through, when the marines are brought in and the plot kicks into gear for what I would've expected from Torin Kerr. Pierce delivers an exciting story with familiar faces, though I'm not sure I would have enjoyed it as much without them. less
