Walker,
review 1: Good story with strong elements, but I feel that it could have been better woven together & better prepared. Nevertheless, I did enjoy reading it. I liked the characters and being exposed to different aspects of the tribe and their beliefs/practices. However, I should have read this when I was younger. It might have been easier to overlook the scattered plot and instead resonate more with the themes of native independence, pride in oneself & ones' tribe/community/homeland, self/group determination, and the deep sense of strength of will & character.
review 2: When I first started reading this book, I just started reading it bacause I had to have another book read by December 9th. But as I started to get into the middle of the book, I really enjoyed reading it.
... moreIt had all of the elements of a book that I like. It had action and it didn't lag in parts, the author really did a good job of that. The book starts out with the girl, Siki, telling about her little brother, Tazzhi, that got killed by the Mexicans when they went to trade goods and products with them. They came in peace and didn't want to cause and tention with their new neighbors. She says that the Mexicans came in when all of their warriors were out hunting for dinner, and how the Mexican soldiers killed everyone that they could, little children, to the oldest, wisest Apache. She watches the scene from a tree because she went to go get water from the river. She then vows to avenge her little brother's life and kill the man who killed him. It then goes on to tell the trail of her training to become a warrior. After, "many moons", she finally goes to battle with the rest of the warriors as a novice and is making the first of the four required trails of battle that is required to be granted entrane into the Council of Warriors. She goes as a novice and has to do the chores for all of the warriors so they can rest for the battles. After a couple of days, the warriors are ready to go and avenge their tribe and the lives of their wives and children. It's here that Siki finds the man that killed Tazzhi and she kills him with Tazzhi's spear that she fashioned for him. After that, they travel home and as the years go on, she completes the four required battle trails to become a warrior. All of the while, new settlers are coming in and abusing the Apache tribes in that valley. At the end, the chief, Chodini, asks her to accompany him in a visit to the, "White Eyes",(Americans), to ask for food because their tribe is starving. Immediately they take the chief and kill him, and are about to take her and kill her, but her dad, that they believed to be dead and they don't really care because he dishonored himself in battle, and takes her to talk to her. He wants her to stay, but she says that she wants to die Apache, and will not stay with him.The book was a real testiment to me about how the Indians were very mistreated and abused. It was really eye opening and a great lesson on how we should treat everyone. We shouldn't just barge in and think that everything is ours. Us Americans have done that a lot in our history. We discover a new land, and we think that we own it, even though the Indians were her long before we were. When we started moving west, we took all of the Natives' land by force, killing and slaughtering all of them thinking that we are better than they are and just go in there and capture it all. We should try to be more like the Indians, live off of the land, and take only what we need, and not be so greedy. In conclusion, "I Am Apache", is a book about the Apache tribe, mainly about a girl named Siki, and how she swears to avenge her brothers life by killing the man who killed him. She continues on her way to become a warrior, and goes on many war paths and eventially becomes a warrior. Then Chodini wants her to come with him to plead for some food, because it's winter and they are starving, so they plead to the "White Eyes" for food and Chodini gets killed almost immediatley, and Siki talks to her long-lost dad. He wants her to stay with him, but she will die Apache, and returns to her tribe. less
