review 1: Finally got around to reading something of Tao Lin's. This was good, I liked it. He seems to inspire either devotion or hate, but I was somewhere in between those two things. The tone of all these stories is very similar--some are more realistic, some are more absurd/fantastical, but the language he uses always creates the same feeling of detachment and vague depression. Reading several of these stories in a row, on a computer screen, I started to feel how I imagine it feels to be autistic, except aware of that being somehow different. Very removed from everything, observing the world around me as if from a distance. To me, any writing that can create that kind of effect in a reader is successful writing, even if you may not enjoy the effect it cre... moreates.
review 2: Other than the story "Sasquatch" from his other collection Bed, this was my introduction to Tao Lin's short fiction and I really, really loved it. Each story was either very funny or very sad, or it possessed a magnificent intertwining of severe funniness and severe sadness that I've never experienced from any other author before. Some favorites of mine included "Driveway," "Cancer," "Tapei, Taiwan," "Mistake," and "The Novelist." less
