review 1: Tatiana de Rosnay certainly comes up with unique plots, but this one is kind of macabre at times. Set in Paris in the 1860's when the city was being modernized, it was interesting enough that I finished it, but most of the time I felt like there also wasn't much happening. Written in the form of letters to her dead husband, the main character, Rose Bazlet, is very upset that her whole street is slated to be destroyed to make way for new, wide, clean boulevards. What she does about it is very unusual, and when the actual climax comes you can feel the tension. Beyond getting to know Rose and what has impacted her life, there aren't very many other characters that held my attention, as most of them are minor in the scheme of the story. Not one of my favorites, but still worth... more the time to read it.
review 2: Sarah's Key really resonated for me, so I was excited to pick up another book by de Rosnay. I was hesitant when I started, the shaky narrator writing to her dead husband felt despondent and unwell. The tone felt like a French woman's version of Krapp's Last Tape (Samuel Beckett). But I persisted. And I was sucked into the story. This is beautifully written.Yet at the end, my first thoughts were "that's two hours of my life that I'll never get back." less

It was different. I liked it but didn't enjoy it as much as "Sarah's Key" by the same author.
