review 1: I enjoyed Sarah's Key, so looked forward to A Secret Kept. I chose the audio version to listen to as I. drove around town. I found myself quickly immersed in the story and longing for the answers Antoine Rey sought. Antoine at middle age finds his future unclear as he struggles with a recent divorce from a wife he still loves, an underdeveloped relationship with an ailing father and 3 teenage children he's now part-time parenting. A celebratory weekend with his sister at a favorite family resort of their childhoods, turns upside down with an auto accident that nearly ends his sister's life and reveals secrets regarding their deceased mother. Antoine's strong desire to understand his mother's secret could destroy current relationships or provide greater understanding to ... morethe mystery of his mother's life and death.
review 2: Antoine Rey thought he had the perfect surprise for his sister Mélanie’s birthday: a weekend by the sea at Noirmoutier Island , where the pair spent many happy childhood summers playing on the beach. It had been too long, Antoine thought, since they’d returned to the island—over thirty years, since their mother died and the family holidays ceased. But the island’s haunting beauty triggers more than happy memories; it reminds Mélanie of something unexpected and deeply disturbing about their last island summer. When, on the drive home to Paris, she finally summons the courage to reveal what she knows to Antoine, her emotions overcome her and she loses control of the car.Trapped in the wake of a family secret shrouded by taboo, Antoine must confront his past and also his troubled relationships with his own children. How well does he really know his mother, his children, even himself? Suddenly fragile on all fronts – as a son, a husband, a brother and a father – Antoine Rey will soon learn the shocking truth about his family and himself. By turns thrilling and seductive, with a lingering effect that is bittersweet and redeeming, A Secret Kept is the story of a modern family and the invisible ties that hold it together. less

I love the author and I love her writing but the book wasn't super great. To me it was just okay.

Hoped this book would have been better. Not nearly as good as Sarah's Key.

Wasn't crazy about it. Loved Sarah's Key and thought it might be similar.
